A while back I was contacted by an old co-worker from Petro asking me if I would be interested in covering her mat leave when she gets pregnant. Me not being one to shut down any opportunity said I was interested. Silly me thinking it would be a while before anything happened was shocked when I found out she was due in November. The last mat leave cover she had was okay but this time they were looking for someone who fit better with the team etc. I went in at the end of June for an “interview”. I say “interview” because it was more like a meet and greet telling me about the job and asking if I was interested still. I received more information on pay etc. and I took a week to think it over. I mean to leave a permanent job for a mat leave job? I weighed the pros and cons and talked it over (and over) with Alexander and I decided to go for it. They didn’t want me to start until beginning of October so it was like my dirty secret I was keeping at SJ all summer. I mean I felt bad and everything but I had made up my mind and there were a few things going on at SJ that weren’t just right. The last mat leave cover didn’t have a lot of training time before being left on her own and that is why she was just okay. They didn’t want a repeat of that so they actually wanted me to start earlier than beginning of October to have a lot of training time. I started at Petro (technically Suncor now) on September 15th. Putting in my notice at SJ was nerve wracking to say the least! Every time I went into my bosses office to give him my resignation letter he had a phone call so it took me a long stressful hour until I could break the news to him. I was worried he would react badly but surprisingly he understood. They wanted to hire someone to take my place asap even though I tried telling them they didn’t need someone in the position or at least someone full time. So my last week I helped in the interview process and then helped train the new hire. It was a little weird to be involved in picking my replacement but good experience. I finished at SJ on September 9th and I had 5 days to kill until my September 15th start date so I was able to convince Alexander to keep up our annual tradition to Disney alive. We did a quick 4 night/5 day trip to Disneyland. It was a little strange being back at Petro. I started back at Petro 2 years less a day then when I was laid off. It was the same yet different. I recognized a lot of familiar faces and caught up with a lot of old co-workers. So far it is going great. I am still training and learning a lot and keeping busy. The commute is awesome. I am really keeping positive that in a year there will be another position available for me and if not I keep hearing another boom is going to be happening so if worse comes to worse I head back up North. Work is keeping me busy and wedding is almost here so my life has been crazy busy but I want to try harder to blog/document more of my/our day to day so I don’t forget!
